US Press Freedom Plunges
The U.S. has fallen 36 places in the Index of Press Freedom by Reporters since it was first published by Reporters Without Borders in 2002. It has fallen 9 places since last year.
Bloggers are particularly vulnerable to governmental attack because they are not paid members of the MSM, but all U.S. reporters are at risk.
The Bush administration has become increasingly hostile to the media recently, using the Patriot Act to curtail and browbeat journalists over matters of so-called “national security” even though many investigations and opinions have had nothing to do with potential terrorism.
There are 53 bloggers and about 120 journalists now in jail for expressing themselves worldwide.
