U.S. Expands Terror War
A U.S. attack plane, launched from the deck of the aircraft carrier Eisenhower, assaulted a small village in Somalia late Monday, killing many people and animals, according to a senior Somali source.
The target was allegedly Abu Talha al-Sudani, leader of al Qaeda’s East African cell, and architect of the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania. Other al Qaeda suspects were also targeted. There is no word on the success or failure of this mission.
Islamist fighters ousted an American-backed consortium of warlords in June, and officials in the U.S and in neighboring Ethiopia feared expansion into that nation. Ethiopia is primarily Christian.
Is this expansion the excuse that Bush needs to justify extra funding to the Democratic Congress? A larger war, already begun immediately before his nationwide speech on Wednesday?

The activity in Somalia is probably fairly cheep, as these things go. At least the U.S. is going after al Qada, a real threat.
True, this action probably doesn’t cost a lot, comparatively speaking, but the Bush administration has never been shy about overstating their need or using creative bookkeeping in order to show the necessity.
I agree that it’s better they go after al-Qaeda than set up a military oil-stealing enterprise in Iraq. That is a group that has no interest in a solution, no matter who governs, or what is attempted.

I fear that I’ve been lax in my writing lately; the mind-numbing belief that politics as usual will carry the day is overwhelming. It seems almost inevitable that Hillary Clinton will face off against Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney in the General Election, and NOTHING will change if this is the case.
In the end it won’t be politics that makes or breaks the world. It’s a matter of handling the broad insanity on the planet which starts with helping individual people. Raising the awareness of what is happening is important and vital. But try not to let it get to you. Politics has always been insane and what happens in the next election is probably not as important as what each individual does, on the ground or otherwise, grassroots or broad scale. The world isn’t in their hands no matter how much it may seem that way.
Good point. Here’s hoping people wake up to the fact that business-as-usual won’t cure what is wrong in this country. Or in other countries, for that matter.
