Thanks But No Thanks?
President Bush has so far proved unreceptive to the main recommendations of the Iraq Study Group. The major thrust of those suggestions involved increased diplomacy with America’s enemies in the Middle East, along with a plan to gradually withdraw combat forces in favor of a training and advisement program for the military.
Instead, Bush has vowed to change course in order to deliver the victory expected by the American people–whatever that might mean.
Co-chair James Baker has already been blasted by the White House, even though he is an old friend of the Bush family. A spokesman for the president said, “Jim Baker can go back to his day job.”
