Liberty Board Criticized
The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board received harsh criticism from advocacy groups during its first public hearing Tuesday. It was urged by witnesses to be more aggressive on policies such as the NSA’s warrantless spying program.
The panel was created by Congress due to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission in order to ensure that civil liberties are considered when laws and regulations are created by the executive branch. Since its members are appointed by the President, however, it is considered to be a paper tiger by critics.
