Bush War Strategy To Surge Ahead
According to anonymous AP sources close to the situation, both Ambassador Ryan Crocker and General David Petraeus have determined that current US strategy in Iraq is working. They have already met with the President to inform him of their assessment. This is what will be presented in the so-called “Petraeus Report.” Big deal. Huge surprise.
Although the al-Maliki government is thought to be rudderless and ultimately untenable, Crocker will report that replacement is inadvisable at this time. Neither he nor Petraeus will recommend anything more than a symbolic reduction in troops.
Petraeus has hopes for elected office once his military career is over, so it is incumbant on him to make the President’s plan work.
Neither the General nor the Ambassador plan to meet with Bush again before their Congressional appearances, in order to preserve the “independence and the integrity of their testimony.”
The question now is whether Congress will continue to support the conflict out of fears of job security, or whether they will say “enough!”, and begin to end George Bush’s folly.
